Health and Safety Intern

The Environmental Health & Safety Intern position is to assist in the development, implementation and management of the site environmental and health & safety systems in a proactive manner. Responsible for studying leading & lagging indicators and implementing effective solutions, as needed. Helps to ensure compliance to government regulations, company policies, and promotes continuous improvement. Supports plant operations by educating team members on health & safety, monitors health & safety systems for all personnel working in the facility and routinely interacts with team members in their work areas.
This position is an internship that would be between 6-12 months long. This is a 20-30 hours per week position and the schedule can be flexible. This is a PAID internship, however this position does not include: 401K, health insurance, time off, etc. This is located in North Canton, Ohio. We are only considering candidates that are currently living in the area at this time.
- Help develop site specific training programs required by our company and local and federal regulations as needed.
- Work with injured team members and Supervisor to assign adequate duties that work within team member’s restrictions for safe and early return to work.
- Understand health and safety risks associated with jobs and provides effective guidance to eliminate risks for potential accidents.
- Participate in monthly safety team meetings to discuss safety issues within the facility.
- Help analyze incidents for root cause, severity and frequency.
- Recommend preventive solutions to eliminate hazards utilizing the company reporting database.
- Maintain safety boards and communication tools up to date with pertinent health & safety information
- Maintain the health and safety document control system.
- Review and create job safety analysis and risk assessments.
- Participate in GEMBA safety walks.
- Assist in formalizing the confined space and lock out, tag out, try out programs.
- Participate in and conduct safety training.
- Support health and safety CAPEX projects.
- EHS background in either form of schooling and/or current work practice.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Excellent interpersonal interactions.
- Ability to build teams throughout all levels and functions of the site with respect, tact and win-win outcomes.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills are required along with the ability able to communicate with audiences that have a broad range of background and understanding.
- Training & presentation skills.
- Ability to assist and learn site relevant federal and state OSHA, NFPA, ANSI requirements.
- Technical writing skills (policies, procedures, reference manuals, and training materials
- Microsoft Office experience
- Reading and comprehension skills and legal & regulatory interpretation
- Initiative to lead continuous improvement efforts.
